… did I tell you to do?

This is a text written mainly by Paolo Virno, I believe, signed by the “Immaterial Workers of the World” which I found online here and here. The translation is by Myk Zeitlin. The text is online in Italian here and in Spanish here. It’s title is “What did I tell you?”, in Italian, “Che te lo dico a fare”. It first appeared in issue 18 of Derive Approdi, contents listed here. There’s a short preface to the text which isn’t translated. I may take a crack at that in the next week or so. (more…)

… perspective is that?

I had discussion over coffee w/ my pals JC and Matt today re: the Fragment On Machines. We discussed through the end of notebook 6, pages 690-695. I now think some of my initial responses were wrong, or at least problematic. I’ll write on that in a bit, in the body of this post. In the meanwhile, Marx’s discussion there of fixed and circulating capital suggests it’s worth revisiting chapter eight of v2 of Capital, said chapter which references chapter eight of v1.

… is general intellect?

General intellect is one of the terms I had in mind when I first set up this blog. The goal was to treat this and other terms as questions to ask rather than certainties to rely on. That’s the point of the title and the sometimes rather limiting format of every post being posed in the form of a question. It’s gratifying whenever I’m actually working on that that initial goal and especially so with regard to one of those terms I set out to try and really get my head clear on and ask questions about. … is the Fragment On Machines?

It’s always a bit embarassing when you’re like “hey why don’t we go/do …” and someone’s all “Yeah, let’s! How do we …” and you’re going “Well, uhh, actually, I’m not totally sure, but I think I heard one time that maybe…” That’s how it was for me a bit. “Hey gang, let’s read the Fragment On Machines!” “Wait, what is the Fragment On Machines, exactly?” Uhh… (more…)

… is the glossatariat?

Dictionariat? Definitionariat?

All of these puns suck. I apologize. Please excuse my ailing sense of humor, exacerbated by the fact that I have so much fucking stupid work to do. Damn it. (more…)

… does Agamben mean by general intellect?

“[A] life directed toward the idea of happiness and cohesive with a form-of-life is thinkable only starting from (…) the irrevocable exodus from any sovereignty.”

“I call thought the nexus that constitutes the forms of life in an inseparable context as form-of-life. I do not mean by this individual exercise of an organ or of a psychic faculty, but rather an experience, an experimentum that has as its object the potential character of life and of human intelligence. (…) The experience of thought that is here in question is always experience of a common power. Community and power identify with each other without residues because the inherence of a communitarian principle to any power is a function of the necessarily potential character of any community.” (more…)
