I’m so blogging!

Hola, amigos. I know it’s been a long time since I rapped at ya, but I’ve had a lot on my mind - except hair. I’m totally balding, and that sucks. Saw a Minnesota Thunder game, that was pretty cool. Some reading too, I guess. I’ll write more on that stuff later. Eventually. Still got a fucking bat living in my place, and by living I mean peeing. I may actually read a bit of fiction other than comics one of these days, I got a few books of the made up variety on my desk. I’ve been doing some more bouldering and trying to get more people to go with me. Seriously, bouldering rocks. Except I sort of hurt myself today. I’m feeling better now I think - lots of heat on my arm and some ibuprofen and a beer. We’ll see how it is tomorrow. Been teaching a lot. Still on a grindcore kick. That drummer from Nasum can drum his ass off. Screams like it too. Not much else to add really. One more thing - if there’s any food that doesn’t get better with Sriracha on it, I don’t want to know.

… justifies pay for research?

Done some thinking on the bus the other day. Started with this question: is the current system of distribution of income in US universities in the humanities justified? (generally higher pay for researchers over teachers and bonuses given for those who research, or rather, publish more often) (more…)

… illustrates use value?

I can’t be bothered to look them up right now but I’ve commented before (though I think not in these words) on my views on the category “use value” in Marx as being a philosophically minimalist category and having little normative quality to it, at least when used analytically. That is, use values aren’t good or bad, for one thing. Anyhow, this bit of William Cronon’s Changes In The Land might be useful if I ever want to actually make the case for this. (more…)

… happened to Marxism after Said?

Notes on this article “Rethinking the Historical Genealogy of Orientalism” by Burke and Prochaska, in History and Anthropology, Volume 18 Issue 2 2007. These are for a thing I’m working on. The notes are critical and don’t at all make clear that I actually think it’s a great and very useful article. (more…)

… happened in Seattle?

I don’t mean grunge or the 1919 general strike or the pleasant visit I had about a month ago. I mean this movie that just came out about it, Battle In Seattle. I haven’t seen it yet but I plan to. I have to say, its existence is another thing on the list of things that make me feel old. Oh well.

Friend of mine co-wrote a review of the movie, it’s posted at anarkismo here. Check it out.
