Hi Adam,
I agree. I don't think it's harmful stuff. I do think it appeals to some parts of me that I'm not proud of, but that's not the same as being harmful. Gotta run, more soon.

Great take on the Bourne movies. I watched the first two with my family after Thanksgiving dinner a few years back. Maybe we identify with his charactor more because he avoids your typical brute, Rambo/Terminator personas and is the cunning and intelligent ninja hero. As long as we understand and maintain our critical perspectives, I don't think its any more harmful to enjoy the Bourne movies than say listen regularly to local hip-hop stations (or other mainstream music for that matter).

Hmm. Why not? I can't see any downsides. If you had any enemies she could beat them up.

hey David,

Thanks for the comment. Yeah agreed, I had that in mind but wasn't sure how to talk about it. I've not read that book and I'm not good at this sort of analysis, this post was actually quite hard for me to write ... believe it or not - hopefully it's hard to believe. :)

I'll add that book to my overly long reading list. At some point I'd like to an exco reading group on the history whiteness and white skin privilege - I've read some of Roediger and Ignatiev but they have a lot of stuff I've not read (and there's a ton of other stuff, like Ted Allen) and I think better when I'm in conversation than alone. It turns out that Jewon is very interested in the history of slavery in the US, mainly in the 19th century. I'm going to see if she and I can do an exco thing together - she knows the literary stuff on that (and maybe the history as well, I dunno), I know a bit of the history on it and want to know more. Oh this is quite the digression -- what I meant to say was, yes I agree but I'm not sure how to carry out that analysis, can you take a crack at it? :)

I feel like including an analysis based on whiteness would do wonders to understanding this type of movie (or rather it does for me). Also see Richard Dyer's amazing book "White".
