When I'm really looking to ram home the sad and/or bitter, I turn to the work of Mark Eitzel, though "Jester's Siren" by Lullaby for the Working Class captures resigned bitterness like nothing else. The other day on NPR they had a piece on about a guy who had moved to Mpls to finish writing his dissertation on Prince. Apparently Prince has some awful song called "Sometimes it Snows in April", and the guy had to confront the fact that, all metaphor aside, it really just does snow in April sometimes.
