Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Christina Rosevear, a Starbucks Barista and IWW member is in extreme distress and needs your help. Although she is over 8 months pregnant, Christina is being forced back to work on Monday, September 3rd. If she does not return, she will lose her job and her health benefits. Starbucks will not extend Christina’s pregnancy leave and she is due in just weeks.
For the sake of Christina and her family please do two things:
1) Participate in the e-mail action to Starbucks at http://www.starbucksunion.org/node/1866
2) Call “Partner” Resources Manager Jenelyn Marinas at 415-241-0256 x 2228 and demand Christina not be fired.
Thank you in advance for your immediate solidarity in this matter. Please also consider making a donation to the campaign so we can continue to have a voice for Christina and others like her. Contribute online now at: http://starbucksunion.org/contribute
Someone I know has proposed a meeting or conference or something for the weekend after next, here’s my notes on what I plan to say. (more…)
I post this just to remind myself to go back and look at this. I plan to look up what my university’s policies are on merit pay for faculty and see if I can find anything on this in the university industry generally. The university introduced these policies for university librarians recently, describing merit pay as a “compensation system in which base-pay increases are individual instead of across the board.” That is, it’s an anti-collective and anti-union measure. Three links, here, here, and here. More later.
I’m a big Chumbawamba fan. I think they’re fantastic. One of their tunes, “I’m Not Sorry I Was Having Fun,” includes the line “I got that old time religion, where we still don’t cross the picket lines.” (more…)
I’m told that Nietzsche says that life is best or only justifiable in aesthetic terms. (more…)
Sometimes I find the elipse-question format for post titles a bit limiting. Mostly when I can’t think of a title that fits the format. Of course, I usually can’t think of any other title either. (more…)
A member of the Chicago Couriers Union was killed recently on his bike, hit by a truck. Details here and here. I believe there will be donations taken for his family, I’ll put the info on that here as I get it.
I’m glad you asked. (more…)
