Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Christina Rosevear, a Starbucks Barista and IWW member is in extreme distress and needs your help. Although she is over 8 months pregnant, Christina is being forced back to work on Monday, September 3rd. If she does not return, she will lose her job and her health benefits. Starbucks will not extend Christina’s pregnancy leave and she is due in just weeks.
For the sake of Christina and her family please do two things:
1) Participate in the e-mail action to Starbucks at http://www.starbucksunion.org/node/1866
2) Call “Partner” Resources Manager Jenelyn Marinas at 415-241-0256 x 2228 and demand Christina not be fired.

I post this just to remind myself to go back and look at this. I plan to look up what my university’s policies are on merit pay for faculty and see if I can find anything on this in the university industry generally. The university introduced these policies for university librarians recently, describing merit pay as a “compensation system in which base-pay increases are individual instead of across the board.” That is, it’s an anti-collective and anti-union measure. A member of the Chicago Couriers Union was killed recently on his bike, hit by a truck. Details here and here. I believe there will be donations taken for his family, I’ll put the info on that here as I get it.
