Brownies made with bourbon. And among other things, two really great CDs. The first is “Mijo Goes To Junior College, by Manic Hispanic.” “Mijo”’s title and album cover is a parody of (or, homage to) the Descendents’ “Milo Goes To College.” The disc consists of reworked versions of old punk rock favorites. “Brand New Impala”, “Tio’s Got A Secret”, and “She Turned Into Llorona” are fantastic and have reminded me how great the originals are. Their version of “The KKK Took My Baby Away” is I think better than the original. The original is about Johnny Ramone starting to date someone that Joey was involved with (the KKK is a metaphor for Johnny). The Manic Hispanic version is “The INS Took My Novia Away,” which is fantastic.
The second CD is “This Won’t Hurt…”, the newest album by The Methadones, one of my favorite bands who are still together - one of my favorite bands at all, really - and part of a long list of bands from Chicago who don’t get attention at all commensurate to their talent. To quote a Jawbreaker song, “it’s as good as it is sad.” And angry. And full of catchy hooks. There’s also a song with a verse about dollar-beer-and-punk-DJ night at my favorite bar in Chicago, where a dear friend of mine works and which I have many fond memories of.

Hey, when’s your birthday, then? Mine just passed too: Hiroshima Day.

Jon, happy birthday! Mine was yesterday and was really really great. Very low key hanging out with Angelica, just what I wanted. I’ve been meaning to write you for a while and to respond to your posts on multitude. I’ll do so soon-ish.
Matt, you’re kind and I look forward to hanging out. I’d particularly like to get drunk at a time that works for us both. Safe travels.

Hey, happy birthday, Nate!
Have fun with those amazing-sounding brownies and of course, all the noo moosic!

Thanks WP. Actually, make that “avast!” or something else piratical. (I too need to practice.)
The brownies were really, really good. They’re pretty much gone. On their own I could definitely tell they had whiskey in them. With ice cream on top, less noticeable but no less delicious. What was also quite good was the bit of batter I had before they were baked, before most of the alcohol cooked off. Thinking of this makes me want to fix a drink right now, thinking of it. And…
I’m back. I’ve become fond of Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon cut with some water. It makes the drink less harsh but still tastes nice. I started drinking it the other week when my wife was out of town, I watched about 20 hours of TV on DVD, including a lot of this show Deadwood where they drink a lot of whiskey shots, which makes me want to drink. If I drank at their pace, though, I wouldn’t be able to follow the plot. Hence the water.
take it easy,
Nate

Ah, I totally sympathise with the Deadwood addiction. I only recently felt strong enough to break my heart by watching the last episode… I think what I love about the drinking in it is the haphazard filling of glasses; they rarely fill to the top, and spill all over the sides. I can’t help feeling vaguely disapproving. It must be my student training in drinking: anything spilt must be licked up
I like to think that stands me in good stead for my piratical-ness: after all, out at sea no one’s going to let good rum go to waste, right?! Avast!
